265/40 R18 is used on many large performance saloons including staggered wheel set-ups on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. 265 is the tyre width in mm, and 40 is the ratio. 40% of 265mm equals a sidewall of 106mm. R18 means there is a radial tyre on an 18-inch rim, resulting in an overall diameter of 669mm. The sidewall has less flex on rougher roads.
