Van tyres are stronger and more versatile than car tyres, in terms of durability, reliability, and handling under the weight of heavier loads. Frequent stops are factored in, alongside the typically heavy weight of commercial and domestic vans, meaning that tyres need to be able to withstand changing load capacity and driving style. Tyres that are marked with a ‘C’ on the sidewall are approved commercial tyres – or you can look at the tyre type to determine its suitability for different vehicles.
Van tyres, like car tyres, can last for anywhere between 20,000 and 40,000 miles, depending on driving conditions and tyre maintenance. If tyres are used regularly then they need more regular checks to ensure they are free from damage and that the tyre tread is still legal.
Similarly, those tyres used on light commercial vehicles will wear down at a different rate to the tyres fitted to heavier vans.
You can replace all four tyres at once if they need doing – however, you don’t have to.
Many drivers and vehicle owners will opt to fit new tyres to the back (rear axle) of the car and move the former back wheels forward to the front axle. This optimises the lifespan of new tyres, as the front tyres become worn at a faster rate.
The benefit of replacing all four at once is a perfect balance when handling and accelerating / braking. However, replacing just two tyres makes the process more affordable.
The tyre size of any tyre is printed on its sidewall, with your vehicle handbook containing information on the specifications you should look for in your tyres.
As with car tyres, the legal tread limit for van tyres is 1.6mm all the way around the circumference tyre and across at least 75% of its surface width.
Not only will your van fail its MOT if the tread pattern does not meet this legal limit, but the vehicle will be unsafe to drive and will not handle or perform effectively on the road.
Van tyres are designed, built, and constructed differently from car tyres – and so it is not safe to mix and match them. Nor is it safe to fit car tyres to a van, as standard car tyres are not large or strong enough to handle the size and weight of a van and its load.
Vehicle tyres should be selected based on vehicle type and weight, with a wide range of different types of van tyres available on our site.
The best van tyres are, like car tyres, manufactured by premium tyre brands like Michelin, Pirelli, Goodyear and Continental.
Van drivers can opt for mid-range and budget tyres if they prefer, always looking out for the ‘C’ marking that indicates a tyre has been developed with commercial use and larger vehicles in mind.
