Not all tyre brands manufacture campervan tyres – with the highest quality tyres coming from premium brands like Michelin and Continental. In terms of exact models, some of the highest recommended tyres for campervans include the Michelin CrossClimate Camping Van tyres, the Hankook RA28E tyres, and the Continental tyre Vanco Camper range.
Continental’s VanContact 4Season tyres are also well suited to versatile staycations and variable weather conditions, reducing the risk of aquaplaning in summer. Other tyre brands to consider include Goodyear and Pirelli which are both reputable for their selection of new tyres for mobile homes, campervans, and motorhomes.
The extra weight of a campervan and the different vehicle size means that car tyres do not have the stability or structure to safely support a campervan.
Some of the biggest differences between campervan tyres and car tyres include stability, construction, and size – meaning that drivers need to select tyres to support the high pressure and heavier load of a weighty campervan vehicle.
Campervan tyres are exposed to the elements all year-round and can often spend extended periods of time sitting unused. Depending on maintenance, campervan tyres can last for between 5 and 7 years, though this can be shorter if the tyres become damaged through use on challenging terrains or through damage caused by sitting unused.
It’s important to check tyres before use or a long journey, even if they look to be in good condition or haven’t been used very often. These checks include ensuring tyres are compatible with the vehicle speed rating, are maintained to the correct pressure, and have an even level of tread wear across the surface.
Like all tyres, campervan tyres need to have a minimum of 1.6mm tread depth in order to be legal. However, while car tyres need this 1.6mm legal limit to be consistent across the full surface of the tyre, for campervans the 1.6mm only needs to be consistent across 75% of the tyre surface.
Vehicle specifications can be found in the vehicle handbook or by searching your vehicle registration online, making it easy to identify size, tread depth and more.
Campervan tyres and van tyres are often the same. The differences come in tyre type and specification, with the application and use of campervans meaning that drivers tend to choose multi-terrain and all-season tyres to support the challenging climate and varying terrains and conditions.
Both campervan tyres and standard van tyres are available in different tyre sizes, with summer tyres and winter tyres supporting performance across different conditions.
