MG started life as a sales and repairs centre for Morris vehicles, before expanding into its own unique range of iconic sporty cars. Its first model, the MG 14/28, was launched in 1924 – with the brand continuing to design and manufacture cars for a wide variety of uses. While it remains popular for its collection of sports cars, MG has expanded into the electric vehicle market and boasts a range of coupes and saloons for more versatile driving experiences.

Choosing Tyres for an MG

The ownership of MG has changed hands many times during its history, exposing the vehicle manufacturer to different innovations and technologies. First owned independently, MG was then passed to the British Motor Corporation before being absorbed into the British Leyland Motor Corporation and then the Rover Group. In the early 2000s, MG was purchased by a Chinese automobile group that eventually became known as SAIC Motor – under which MG still sits today.

This potted history means that MG has changed its approach over the years, though the most recent acquisition by the SAIC Motor group has put MG back in the automotive spotlight with innovative models that boast broad market appeal.

Some of the most notable MG models over the years have included the MG Midget classic car, the MGB, the MG Metro, the MG 14/28, and the Rover 75. Most recently, new models including the MG3 and the MG ZS have transformed the market again, taking the compact and high-performance traits of early MG vehicles and giving them a modern facelift to produce family car options.

But despite MG’s changing approach to the automotive market, one thing that has never changed is the brand’s approach to high quality components. Searching for tyres that offer a perfect fit without compromising on quality, some of MG’s top OEM (original equipment) tyre brands include Goodyear, Michelin, Bridgestone, and Pirelli. Maxxis and Hankook are a couple of other brands that produce car tyres recommended by MG, specifically the Maxxis AP3 tyres and the Hankook Kinergy4S2 all-season tyres.

MG Tyres FAQs
Wondering what tyres you should match with your MG car? Here are a few commonly asked questions and the answers from our tyre experts.

There are a couple of MG car models that are designed for off-road driving – including the MG 4x4 and the more recent MG Cyber X which boasts off-road capabilities. Any off-road vehicle needs the right tyres in order to perform well, ensuring traction and grip as well as a comfortable driving experience.

With sports cars typically smaller and lighter than other regular vehicles, it’s important that the tyres you choose have safe handling functionality and the correct tyre tread to ensure traction when cornering. Pirelli’s range of all-season tyres and summer tyres are well suited to UK road driving, switching to winter tyres on icy and challenging terrain. Hankook is another tyre brand that bridges performance and safety, while Michelin’s tyre range adapts to different driver needs. Whether you opt for premium tyres or budget tyres, getting the right tyre size and speed rating is key for sports performance.

MG has taken part in several motorsport events, with its cars being used in competition from the earliest MG days. An early collection of race-specific vehicles included models like the C-Type and Q-Type, while more recent variations on the MG GT car have performed well at events around the world.

Run-flat tyres can be fitted to MG cars with ease, bringing added convenience and safety to every journey. These tyres are designed with reinforced sidewalls and stronger construction, to maximise the stability of the vehicle and ensure that the driver retains control even following a sudden loss of tyre pressure. MG cars don’t need run-flat tyres, but they are a good option for those facing long drives and those who want the convenience of being able to keep driving even after a puncture.

Tyres are the one part of the vehicle that consistently touches the road, so they need to be regularly inspected for any damage or signs of uneven tread wear. Tyre tread should have a depth of more than 1.6mm to ensure full safety, and to ensure the vehicle is legal and can pass an MOT. Tyre pressure needs to be optimal to handle the load rating of the vehicle, and drivers need to identify the right new tyres by season and climate / terrain.
