This summer tyre has been created by Vredestein with a specific focus on the improvement of the braking and handling of the tyres on wet roads. Such tyres get rid of concerns about the quality of performance of such tyres above 7 degrees centigrade of temperature. As for the Ultrac tyre, it includes an asymmetrical tread pattern with a stiff outer shoulder for better steering during turns. The inner tread has grooves and slits for water removal from the contact surface. In addition, there is the presence of a silica-based rubber with a multifunctional polymer that helps maintain gripping both in wet and dry conditions.

As Vredestein claims, the Ultrac tyre gives a 15% improvement in terms of dry handling and a 10% improvement in relation to wet braking compared to its predecessor (the Ultrac Satin). The values of fuel economy, wet grip and exterior noise caused by the Ultrac in accordance with EU label ratings depend on the tyre size and vary in the range of grades C, A, and 69 or 72 dB, respectively. Also, certain sizes of the Ultrac have a rim-protection strip, which is a raised outer layer of rubber that touches the kerb first to protect the wheel. They were the same as the ones that were already on the car, so they still worked well. They have good grip, are comfortable, and last a decent amount of time. A good choice. i chose these to maintain consistency with all tyres, but if that wasn't the case, I would have gone for all season tyres for safer winter trips.

Grabbed a 2003 Civic Type S with loads of miles and fitted four new Vredestein tyres. Took it for a spin at Snetterton which started off wet but dried later. We were keeping up with the Caterhams in the rain. Drove over to Germany and Italy in June, hit 130mph on the autobahn, grip was fantastic. Amazingly, they're a much cheaper option than Michelins and still give you plenty of confidence.

These tyres live up to their positive reviews in warm, dry conditions. After the worrying bedding in period, the warmer and drier months provide performances worthy of good reviews. However, colder and wetter conditions are the kryptonite to the tyres. They fall short in these conditions, with their grip being compromised. Confidence to drive in these conditions is low. Confidence is low, but wear is doing well with 5mm tread remaining on all four tyres after about 10,000 miles of lively summer driving.
