The Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 is a winter tyre that maintains flexibility at low temperatures. This is achieved using Michelin’s Helio Compound 4G, combined with sunflower oil. The Pilot Alpin PA4 also has a V-shaped tread which handles the removal of water and slush. 3D sipes (StabiliGrip) also provide traction in winter.

There are also outer edge blocks designed to provide support during cornering (combined with the removal channels in the middle tread). Certain sizes also have Michelin’s ZP run-flat construction. The PA4 is designed for winter use under 7 degrees C, and is available in sizes 17 to 21 inches. We sell the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 with ZP run-flats here at Tyres.co.uk.

Although I have yet to test them in snow, I have found them to work well in cold and wet road conditions. There is hardly any change in the amount of noise they make, but there has been a decline in fuel economy by about 1 mile per gallon.

These are winter tyres. In the summer, I usually go with Pirelli P Zero. Choices for winter tyres are few and far between for this size and customers are often met with sticker shock. Because of the height and width of the tyres, they are not ideal for winter conditions. Surprisingly, they performed great for their first winter season. I drive a sports car and plan on using it during the bad weather, not on days with terrible road conditions, of course. In really cold weather, winter tyres are absolutely a necessity. Just know, if you buy these tyres like I did, the front tyres are smaller with a different tread pattern. It's not a mistake, but it's certainly something I haven't experienced before with all my years of buying tyres.

I received my car just before the summer ended and immediately started researching winter tyres. Everyone I talked to or consulted online said that using a rear-wheel-drive sports car in winter was a bit crazy. I have had these tyres for about 12 weeks and they've been incredible in all types of weather. I have to say, the cold and wet grip is astonishing. I feel completely sure about speeding through the corners. Snow, slush, and ice braking grip is phenomenal. The car feels very stable, and it's hard to lose grip even when I try. I am so impressed with my Michelin tyres that I am already thinking about using them in summer. I plan to buy some Pilot Sport 4s when spring comes.

The tyres make more noise than the X-Ice ones. I observed some roughness while driving at 40kph that was not there with the summer Pilot Sport or the winter X-Ice tyres.
