How much fuel the tyre uses as it rolls. Graded A to E, where A is the most efficient and E the least.
How well the tyre stops in the wet. Graded A to E, where A is the shortest stopping distance. Each grade is worth roughly 3 metres, about a car length.
How loud the tyre is from outside the car, measured in decibels. Graded A to C, where A is the quietest.
Designed for cars, rather than vans, 4x4s or commercial vehicles.
A stronger sidewall lets this tyre carry more weight than a standard tyre of the same size. Marked XL on the sidewall.
Designed for temperatures below 7°C. Summer tyre rubber hardens in the cold and loses grip, while a winter compound stays soft and holds the road in cold, wet and snowy conditions.
The Kumho WinterCraft WS71 uses a cold-weather rubber and a V-shaped winter directional tread to create traction on packed snow and slush. The WS71 is engineered to drain water and slush thanks to the grooves on the tread, which run from the centre to the outer edge. High density 3D sipe technology provides an edge to snow biting, as the sipe is engaged by the snow and provides traction. The rubber is designed to remain flexible in lower temperatures and the outer edge of the tread is designed with a stiffer block to provide support when driving an SUV.
WS71s have 3PMSF and M+S on the sidewalls, meaning the WS71s passed the snow traction test and are marked for mud and snow respectively. The directional tread has a fitting direction indicated on the sidewall, meaning the V-grooves are to face the front of the vehicle. Tyres.co.uk sells the Kumho WinterCraft WS71.
