Do You Need Winter Tyres in Spain?

If the majority of your driving is on UK soil, then you’ll likely already be familiar with the benefits of all-season tyres and the way they support year-round driving in our relatively temperate climate. However, cross the border to international roads, and you’ll find that the rules are a little different.

Countries like Switzerland and Italy require winter tyres to be fitted as necessitated by the road conditions. If the temperature has dropped incredibly low, or there is snow or ice on the ground, winter tyres become part of vehicle regulations – especially on mountainous and challenging roads and passes.

But what about Spain? A notable and incredibly popular tourist spot for UK visitors, what are the tyre rules in and across the roads of Spain?

The Climate and Terrain in Spain

To first look at climate, driving conditions and road terrain, Spain is characterised by its hot summers and its mild winters across much of the country. While mountainous parts of the country can be exposed to colder temperatures in winter, the typical wintery conditions in Spain are temperate, mild and wet.

What this means is that traction is critical, especially on wet roads and trails. But the absence of heavy snowfall and ice means that winter tyres are not usually warranted.

Do I Need Winter Tyres in Spain?

In short, the Spanish approach to winter tyres is much like that in the UK.

While there may be occasions, locations and journeys that require the extra traction and stability of winter tyres, on the whole drivers can handle the changing weather conditions all-year round with all-season tyres.

Legislation in Spain states that winter tyres are recommended when the temperatures drop below 7 degrees Celsius, but that they are not a mandatory requirement for vehicles.

Many drivers opt instead for all-season tyres with the added M+S marking which proves the tyres are suitable and safe for driving on mud and snow. If you choose to fit all-season tyres to your vehicle for driving all-year round, this M+S functionality is a regulatory requirement as it proves the tyres offer sufficient grip against light snowfall and on wet, slippery roads.

What Tyre Maintenance Requirements Exist in Spain?

While there is not specific requirement to fit winter tyres on your vehicle when driving in Spain, that doesn’t mean the country is without its own regulations.

The minimum legal tyre tread depth in Spain is, like in the UK, 1.6mm. However, it is advised that any tyre measuring under 3mm is replaced to ensure safety – especially as winter and colder conditions set in and traction becomes more unstable.

Beyond the tyre tread, tyres need to be maintained in good conditions with no cracks or bulges and should be regularly inspected for signs of damage or uneven wear.
