What Is a Pneumatic Tyre? Types and Uses Explained

Article Image

A pneumatic tyre is any tyre filled with air, foam, or solid material to provide cushioning and grip across different surfaces. In this guide, we explain how pneumatic tyres work, the differences between air-filled, foam-filled, and solid versions, and how to choose the right one for your vehicle or equipment.

A pneumatic tyre is something that we are all familiar with – even if we don’t use the formal terminology very often.

In short, a pneumatic tyre is a tyre that’s designed for outside use, with a metal plate at the centre and a rubber exterior that provides cushioning and flexibility across different terrains.

While there are a couple of different pneumatic tyres to choose from, which we will go on to describe in the next section of this article, the important thing to note is that most tyres you see on outdoor vehicles are a form of pneumatic tyre.

Different Types of Pneumatic Tyres

The different types of pneumatic tyres are distinguished by what’s inside them.

The first type of pneumatic tyre is air-filled – that is, the tyres that we are used to dealing with, that are pumped with air to create that flexible and smooth ride on different terrains and road surfaces.

The next type of pneumatic tyre is filled with foam. These tyres are less susceptible to puncturing and do not require the same high levels of maintenance as those filled with air, though they do create a bumpier ride.

The final type of pneumatic tyre is made and filled with solid rubber – highly durable and puncture-proof, though uncomfortable and with a lack of grip that makes them only suitable for certain uses.

How Are Different Pneumatic Tyres Used?

You will most likely be familiar with the air-filled pneumatic tyres that are fitted to cars and other vehicles.

While these tyres are susceptible to punctures and to damage caused by uneven terrain, they are the most comfortable and facilitate a smooth ride for both driver and passengers.

Because foam-filled and solid pneumatic tyres are much more durable and are considered safe from punctures, they tend to be best suited to rough terrain and to surfaces with a high risk of sharp debris.
