The Legal Requirements For Tyre Tread Depth
With each car tyre navigating the needs of the driver when handling, steering, accelerating, and braking, tread depth plays an integral role in how the car responds to different actions.
Creating friction and grip between the rubber surface and the road, it’s amazing how much both the tread depth and pattern impact the way the tyre responds to water on the road, to ice, to dry road surfaces, and to different terrains.
One regulation to note is that in certain areas of Europe and beyond, the tread pattern must adhere to Winter or Summer tyre standards. While in the UK, the temperate climate means that all-season tyres tend to suffice, in other countries regulations state that winter tyres must be used when the temperature drops by a set number of degrees.

As well as pattern, all drivers must ensure that their tyres have a tread depth of at least 1.6mm around the entire tyre – with no patches showing excess signs of balding beyond this legal minimum limit. Underinflated tyres are sluggish and require more fuel to get them moving, owing to the increase in rubber surface that makes contact with the road. Overinflated tyres, meanwhile, are more susceptible to damage from debris or potholes on the road – with the pressure on the rubber meaning they are more likely to puncture.

Tyre Condition and Why it Matters
Moving on then to the condition of the tyre: namely how well kept it is. Tyres have to be well kept, with no visible signs of damage – external or internal.
There are various indicators of damage that drivers need to be aware of. Bulges can indicate some trauma on the inside of the tyre, while cracks and splits depict damage to the outside which affects the safety and stability of the tyre.
Regular tyre inspections are recognised as an important part of regulatory maintenance, with drivers needing to flag any signs of damage. A mechanic will be able to check if the damage is minimal (for example, if it’s to the rubber surface rather than the inner sidewall), or if it’s structural and will require the tyre to be replaced.
