Tyre Cut to Cords: What It Means and Why It’s Illegal

If your tyre is ‘cut to cords’, it’s far beyond safe driving limits — and driving on it is illegal. This guide explains what exposed cords mean, why they appear, and how to prevent serious damage with timely tyre checks and replacements.

The cords of a tyre make up an integral part of its inner structure and sit beneath the outer rubber surface to help maintain the shape of the tyre and its rigid structure.

Usually made with a combination of polyester and nylon, these cords play a major role in the comfort and smoothness of the drive, by keeping the tyre perfectly balanced and round.

So, what does it mean when you can see the cords through the surface of the tyre?

A Simple Answer…

In short, exposed cords mean that the tyre has worn far beyond what is considered safe or acceptable on the roads.

Remember that 1.6mm minimum tyre tread limit that so many of our articles mention? Well, if the tyre has been cut right down to the cords, then you have well surpassed this legal limit and need to replace your tyres immediately.

A tyre with exposed cords is no longer safe to drive or fit for purpose. It is also important to note that driving on a tyre which has been cut to cords is illegal – and will leave you facing penalties.

What Causes This Excessive Wear on the Tyre?

Depending on where the location of the exposed cords lie on the tyre, there are several underlying issues that could be at play.

If the damage sits across the surface of the tyre, then it’s likely that the tyres are simply worn and have been used well beyond the recommended lifespan.

If the damaged section of the tyre is central to its surface, then tyres may be overinflated.

If the damage has occurred on the edges of the tyre surface, you may be suffering from poor wheel alignment.

A professional will be able to help identify and fix any other damage that has caused excessive tyre wear and tear.
