Has your driveway succumbed to marks left behind by rubber tyres? If so, you may be worried about the kerb appeal of your property and the first impression it presents.

But while many drivers think that tyre marks indicate speeding and skidding, the reality is that there are several different things that could cause your rubber tyres to leave marks on your driveway. In this blog, we’re looking both at the causes of tyre marks and how best to get rid of them.

What Causes Tyre Marks on a Driveway?

Tyre marks are often causes by aggressive driving, skidding, and braking. However, the problem can be exacerbated by tyres which are low in pressure and so release more rubber particles when driving, as well as a driveway surface which is rough and uneven.

Rising temperatures and the heat of the summer months on tyre rubber can also cause it to soften, leaving tyres more susceptible to damage and residue left on the driveway.

While different in their root cause, all of these situations can mean that driving away from home leaves unwanted and unsightly marks outside your property. But how do you remove those marks?

Tips for Removing Tyre Marks

Just as there are several different causes of tyre marks, there are also several potential ways of removing them. These include:

  • Using a pressure washer to hose down the driveway
  • Applying a degreasing cleaner to the marks and then scrubbing them away
  • Using a dedicated outdoor concrete cleaner

You can also attempt DIY cleaning solutions involving baking soda and water, or even a simple can of coke, with a healthy dose of elbow grease often enough to cut through stubborn marks.

Of course, it doesn’t end there. Removing tyre marks is one step of the process, but how can you ensure that they don’t reappear the next time your vehicle is moved?

How to Minimise the Risk of Future Tyre Marks

This is where drivers and vehicle owners need to balance their habits with regular tyre maintenance and ensuring that tyres remain in good condition.

The first and most obvious thing to do is to cut down on harsh braking and aggressive driving when arriving on - or leaving - your driveway. You should also complete regular tyre inspections to ensure the condition is good, thereby minimising the risk of worn tread leaving behind a larger number of rubber particles.

Other things to do include ensuring that the tyres you use are well suited to the climate and conditions and acknowledging the impact of your driveway terrain on potential marks. For example, having softer winter tyres fitted to your vehicle on a hot summers day will only increase the risk of rubber degradation and residual marks, not to mention it impacts the handling quality of the vehicle and your safety behind the wheel.
