M+S on Your Tyres: Mud & Snow Rating Explained Simply

Article Image

Amongst the tyre size calculation, load and speed ratings, and extra markings found on different tyre types, one of the most common is the ‘M+S’ mark.

Found on the sidewall alongside the other aforementioned markings and symbols, this particular acronym is linked with the tyre’s design and how it is used – specifically during the winter months.

What Does ‘M+S’ Mean?

A tyre that displays the M+S marking is designed for traversing muddy and light snow conditions. It’s a form of winter tyre that has more traction than an all-season tyre, but less winter grip and features than dedicated extreme winter tyres.

With M+S standing for Mud + Snow, these tyres boast high grip and traction levels, so as to be able to navigate wet and muddy tracks as well as light snow conditions.

How Do M+S Tyres Compare With 3PMSF Tyres?

Both M+S markings and the 3PMSF symbol are signs that a tyre is built for use in winter. So, where do the differences lie and how do the two compare?

In short, M+S tyres are a less extreme version of 3MSF tyres, which are designed for use in the most extreme winter conditions. Where 3PMSF tyres can handle deep snow and ice, M+S tyres sit somewhere between these and all-season tyres. They are more functional in winter weather than all-season tyres, but do not boast the same features as the most extreme 3PMSF designs.

Key Features of M+S Tyres

So, what is it about M+S tyres that makes them so well suited to their light winter use?

The majority of the standout features are found on the tyre surface and tread block pattern, though it’s worth noting that these tyres are also made from a much more pliable rubber compound which enables them to remain flexible even in colder temperatures.

Other features include the deep tread grooves which maximise traction, the gaps between tread blocks to reduce the risk of aquaplaning and skidding, and the patterns that help create a shovelling effect as you move through mud and snow.

All of the features linked with the design of M+S tyres optimise handling, performance and safety in variable conditions, and make these a good option for those who want a little extra support than that offered with all-season tyres.

Who Needs M+S Tyres?

With all that in mind then, when are M+S tyres recommended and who needs them?

M+S tyres are a form of winter tyre, but do not offer the same extreme protection and features of dedicated winter tyres like 3PMSF models. They can handle some light snow and offer superior traction compared with all-season tyres – though it’s important to note that the build and features of these tyres means they are not as versatile as all-season tyres and can’t be carried through into summer driving.

If you regularly navigate mixed terrain roads and trails and are often faced with mud and/or light snow, then the traction and stability you get from M+S tyres is unrivalled. If, however, you want something for year-round consistency in a temperate climate then you are still better off opting for all-season tyres – whereas those traversing extreme winter conditions should seek dedicated winter and 3PMSF tyres.
