Italy is an ever-popular tourist destination, thanks to its plethora of vineyards, its stunning coastlines, magnificent history and city centres, and the rolling landscape of the country. Anyone who has visited Italy will likely agree that the best way to experience and enjoy as much of the country as possible is with your own vehicle – whether that’s one you bring yourself or hire on arrival.
But what are the tyre requirements in place across Italy, and what do drivers need to know and acknowledge especially during the colder months of winter?
What’s the Climate and Terrain Like in Italy?
The climate, driving conditions, and terrain of Italy depends largely on where you travel to and when you choose to go there. The country boasts an extraordinarily diverse landscape of mountains, rolling hills and smooth roads, interspersed with cities and hamlets. It experiences hot summers and cold winters, with the hillier and more mountainous regions susceptible to snow and ice which can interrupt your journey.
Being prepared is key, which is why good tyre maintenance and securing the right tyres is so important.
Do You Need Winter Tyres in Italy?
There are certain parts of Italy and certain conditions which merit the requirement for winter tyres. Italian regulation states that if your journey calls for them, winter tyres should be fitted between mid-November and mid-April – with the exact details and dates varying from one province to the next.
What we mean by this is that any road or route where winter tyres are a mandatory requirement should be signposted as such. If you come across a road which is signposted as requiring the fitment of winter tyres – or snow chains as an alternative – the requirement applies to all motor vehicles with no exception.
It’s worth noting as well that winter tyres or snow chains are not only necessary in the face of snow on the roads but can also be required in particularly cold areas and in spots where there is ice on the road.
