How Much Does a Car Tyre Weigh?

When buying new tyres, most drivers focus on size and tread pattern — but the tyre’s weight also plays a key role in performance, fuel economy, and safety. In this guide, we explain how much a typical car tyre weighs, why tyre weight varies across vehicle types, and how it impacts your car’s handling and efficiency.

One of the top considerations when choosing car tyres, and an integral part of the tyre size calculation, revolves around the weight of the vehicle body. Tyres need to be strong enough to withstand the weight of the vehicle and moving efficiently, reducing rolling resistance and optimising driver control and handling.

But while the weight of the vehicle and the load rating of the tyre often comes under scrutiny, one thing that doesn’t get talked about as much is the weight of the tyre itself.

In this article, we get to the bottom of car tyre weight and how much you are really driving around with.

Average Weight of a Car Tyre

The average weight of a car tyre is between 20 and 30 pounds, or between 10 and 15kg.

This of course varies depending on the size of the tyre and its core use. A truck tyre weighs considerably more than a standard car tyre, while high performance tyres seem to be consistently getting lighter as manufacturers use different materials and constructive methods.

With that said then, what is the ideal weight for a car tyre?

What is the Ideal Weight for a Tyre?

It all depends on what you want to achieve.

As a general rule, we are seeing regular car tyres getting increasingly lighter, as a result of manufacturers seeking to optimise performance, speed, and fuel efficiency. A lighter tyre reduces rolling resistance, which reduces the vehicle’s rate of fuel consumption and makes it cheaper to run.

However, sports car tyres tend to be heavier due to the thicker tread, the wide grooves, and the more durable materials that are used to construct the tyre.
