Wondering if your tyres are checked during a vehicle service? This guide explains what happens during a service, how it differs from an MOT, and what tyre checks are included. Learn why tyre condition, tread depth, and even wear are key parts of your annual car maintenance – and when to replace your tyres for best safety and performance.

All vehicle owners will be aware that they have to go through an annual MOT and a service check.

The MOT is when a local approved mechanic will test the various functions of the vehicle, establishing its safety credentials and suitability for use on the road. This involves checking the tyres and tyre tread, the brakes, steering, air bags, and other safety features.

The MOT culminates in a certificate with a pass or fail – a failure meaning work needs to be carried out before the vehicle can be legally driven, while the pass may come with recommended works to carry out in the coming months.

The annual vehicle service is an opportunity for the whole vehicle to be assessed. It’s an integral part of any vehicle’s maintenance schedule, checking that all the different elements are working as they should.

Here’s the role that tyres play in a vehicle service.

What Is Being Checked During a Service?

A car service is a way to check all elements of the vehicle, ensuring that they are not only save but are working optimally and efficiently.

While the MOT is a safety test with legal undertones, the annual service is considered a health check-up for the car.

For tyres, the service includes looking at the overall structure and integrity of the tyre, checking the tyre tread, ensuring that all wear on the tyre is evenly balanced around the entire outer edge, and ensuring that things like pressure and tyre type are suitable for the vehicle and climate.

Any worn out car parts or functional components that need attention will be replaced or fixed during the service, giving you back your vehicle in good, working condition.

How to Prepare for a Service

A car or vehicle service is not the same as an MOT – you don’t pass or fail.

However, it’s worth identifying any specific concerns you have and sharing them with the mechanic before they carry out your service.

Note: Every vehicle should undergo at least one full service every year. A full service typically takes around three hours and can cost anywhere from £150 upwards depending on what work needs to be carried out.

Should I Replace Tyres Before a Service?

If you think your tyres need replacing soon, our advice is to do so ahead of your upcoming service – so that the service can include a full assessment of the tyres in situ. Remember, if you’re facing an MOT, all components of the vehicle need to be in excellent and safe working order if you want to pass the test – meaning a service before your MOT is a good idea.

At Tyres.co.uk, we offer a wide range of tyres to suit all vehicles, seasons, and driving behaviours, with the team able to provide bespoke advice to help you make the right choice.
