Different Types of Tyres Explained for Drivers

If you own a vehicle, then you will be familiar with tyre maintenance and the need to not only keep tyres in optimum condition, but also to ensure you have the correct type of tyre fitted on your vehicle.

The types of tyres available on the market span different driving conditions and climates – including winter tyres, summer tyres, all season tyres, and 4x4 tyres to name just a few options.

In this article, we’re talking through the differences between these tyre types and how to know which is the right option for you.

Different Tyre Types Available

The primary choice that drivers and vehicle owners face is between:

  • Winter Tyres
  • Summer Tyres
  • All Season Tyres

Those with the right kind of vehicle can also access run flat tyres, while larger vehicles and off-road vehicles have their own tyres to choose from. For the purpose of this article, we’re acknowledging the wide spread of tyres on the market but focussing specifically on those which are built for passenger vehicles.

Why is Tyre Type Important?

The type of tyre that you fit to your vehicle impacts its performance in certain conditions and on specific road surfaces. This is because of the tyre tread pattern and the way it interacts with the road surface, as well as other factors in the construction and build of the tyre.

While summer tyres are designed to work in dry and warm conditions, winter tyres are built to adapt to wet road surfaces and ensure that the driver retains control over the vehicle.

And it’s not just tyre tread and the way the tyre interacts with the road surface. Different types of tyres also use and are built with different rubbers and material components. Summer tyres, for example, are made from a softer rubber which maximises contact with the road, while winter tyres are made from natural rubber compound which remains pliable in extremely cold conditions.

The type of tyre that you choose impacts how well your vehicle performs, and how safe it is to drive, in certain conditions. UK drivers may not be as familiar with these distinctions and differences, largely because our climate does not stretch into any kind of extremes. However, when it comes to driving overseas and taking your vehicle over the border to other locations and countries, you may find that there are laws around the types of tyre that must be fitted to your vehicle.

Choosing the Right Tyre Type For Your Vehicle

Typically, an all season tyre is sufficient for drivers in the UK – facilitating good traction and control on the road from winter right through to summer. Again, this is because our climate does not lend itself to extremes – retaining a somewhat consistent temperature right through the year.

However, if you live somewhere remote or hilly, typically in the north where the winters are colder and the roads can get icy, winter tyres may be a good fit. Just remember to change them for summer or all season tyres once the weather warms up!
