The reality of getting a puncture while out and about, is that you have no control over where and when your tyres suddenly blows. You could be on a quiet road, a few miles from home and with plenty of space around you to tackle and situation, or you could be on a busy UK motorway.
If you find yourself facing a puncture on the motorway, the first thing to do is to stay calm.
This guide is for drivers who want to know the legality and practicality of changing a tyre on a UK motorway, with advice on how to manage the situation.
What to do if Your Tyre Blows on the Motorway
A sudden tyre blowout can cause you to lose some control over steering, so it’s important to slow down at a controlled speed (not suddenly putting your foot on the brake!) and turn your hazard lights on.
Make your way over to the hard shoulder on the far left hand side of the road, where you can stop and assess the situation.
Some things to remember:
- Turn the steering wheel left, to point your tyres inwards towards the bank / side of the road
- No matter whether you plan to call for roadside assistance or try and change the tyre, get out of the vehicle and move away from it immediately
- Keep your hazard lights on
