C Mark on Van Tyres: What It Really Means

Article Image

Look at the sidewall of any tyre and you will notice a series of markings. Each of these markings, from groups of numbers to letters, symbols and codes, tells us something different about the tyre. But how many of these markings can you correctly identify and interpret?

The truth is that there are some markings that communicate important information that drivers need to be aware of, and there are some markings that are often left unnoticed. In this blog, we’re looking at the ‘C’ marking found specifically on van tyres – breaking down what it means, where you’ll find it, and how to know if you need tyres with this marking or not.

What Does the ‘C’ Marking Mean?

The ‘C’ marking on a van tyre is quite simple – it indicates that a tyre is designed for commercial use.

In terms of its features and benefits, this means that the tyre is built to withstand heavier loads, and can handle the complexities of accelerating, handling and braking under heavy weight pressures.

Can I Use a ‘C’ Marked Tyre on My Car?

If you’re reading this and wondering whether you need ‘C’ marked tyres on your car, either because the vehicle is weighty or because you regularly use your vehicle for towing purposes, then we’re glad you’re here.

While ‘C’ marked tyres are designed to handle heavier loads, they are not suitable for passenger car tyres. This isn’t just because of their varying sizes, but also because they are not equipped to handle the everyday journeys of passenger cars.

Some of the key differences between ‘C’ marked van tyres and regular car tyres include:

  • Commercial tyres have stiffer sidewalls and deeper tread depths for maximum stability. NOTE: These are not the same as reinforced sidewalls, which are built for passenger cars to optimise the lifespan and durability of tyres on lighter vehicles
  • Commercial tyres are hard-wearing rubber compounds that are not as flexible as car tyres and so respond differently to handling
  • Commercial tyres have a much higher load rating and can be inflated to higher pressures

In short, if you were to mix up commercial tyres with car tyres, you would run into issues across durability, handling, safety and performance.

Where to Find the ‘C’ Marking

If you’re on the hunt for replacement tyres for a van or commercial vehicle, then you need to look for the ‘C’ marking on the sidewall. This is most commonly found at the end of the tyre size calculation, printed on the sidewall.

Once tyres near the minimum tread depth of 1.6mm around at least three quarters of the tyre’s surface, it’s important to replace them – ensuring your vehicle remains both safe and legal to drive.
