There are some things in life that lend themselves to being recycled and reused, and some things that don’t.

When it comes to vehicle maintenance and finding replacement parts for your car, safety is the number one priority. And when it comes to buying tyres in particular, safety lies in the tyre tread, the structural integrity of tyres, and in securing the right size and tyre type for your needs.

Should You Buy Part Worn Tyres?

There is no law around buying part worn tyres as opposed to new ones.

However, it is broadly recommended that vehicle owners invest in a new set of replacement tyres, instead of part worn or used ones.

This is because part worn tyres can sometimes conceal invisible damage or have uneven tread wear that impacts the safety of the vehicle.

Of course, this isn’t always the case. Any part worn tyre purchase should be carefully considered, with tyres being closely inspected and checked before being fitted to your vehicle.

What to Check on Part Worn Tyres

If you do decide to buy part worn tyres for your car or vehicle, there are several things you should check.

  • Check the tyre tread level. Remember that the legal minimum limit for tyre tread is 1.6mm. Any part worn tyre purchase should have at least 2mm of tyre tread left, with the recommended tread depth being around 6mm to optimise your purchase
  • Look for cracks, bulges, and any other signs of damage to the tyre sidewall
  • Check the level of tread wear across the entire surface of the tyre. If it looks uneven, then you should steer away from those tyres

Performing these checks will ensure that any part worn tyres you do decide to buy are at least safe to drive on.
