Sumitomo Tyres is its own tyre manufacturing brand that produces passenger car tyres and commercial tyres, as well as 4x4 and SUV tyres, tyres for high-performance driving, and winter tyres for adverse weather conditions. But that’s not all. Sumitomo Rubber Industries is a company that owns several other tyre brands and expands well beyond the tyre market.

History

Both Sumitomo Tyres and Sumitomo Rubber Industries Ltd were founded in 1909, with the former becoming a part of the overarching rubber group. Launched in Japan, Sumitomo immediately invested in Dunlop Japan – creating a link between Sumitomo and Dunlop Tyres that paved the way for a future acquisition almost 60 years later.

When Sumitomo Rubber Industries hit the market, it produced tyres as well as golf balls and tennis balls. Over the years, its role within the automotive tyre industry has continued to grow, with Sumitomo acquiring and owning brands like Dunlop Japan, Falken Tires, Apollo Tyres South Africa, and Ohtsu. It even spent a few years working in partnership with Goodyear, whereby the two manufacturers produced tyres for each other – however, this dissolved years later.

Over its years on the market, Sumitomo has become a global player in the tyre industry – due in no small part to the other brands it is linked with.

Sumitomo’s Position on the Tyre Market

Considered by many to be a budget choice, Sumitomo balances the low cost of its tyres with high quality, reliable control, and high-performance – especially across some of its top tier models available in a range of tyre sizes.

Under the ownership of the Japanese Sumitomo Rubber Industries Group, innovation and leading tyre technology is rife across the full range, matching the quality of Sumitomo branded tyres against other leading brands. The Sumitomo Group Smart Tyre Concept works on the idea that tyres should be able to respond to the needs of vehicles, using Performance Sustaining Technology to minimise the rate of wear, and a Lifecycle Assessment that looks at the sustainability of tyres and how to improve their environmental performance.

In the production of Sumitomo tyres, research and development plays a role in tread design and in the layering of compounds to produce a structure which is flexible but stable and reliably strong.

All of this comes in the form of tyres which are fit for purpose and well-designed, while sticking firmly in the budget-friendly corner of the market. Sumitomo’s quality tyres excel when it comes to reliable performance and stability through different conditions and on different surfaces, while maintaining enviably low prices.

Popular Sumitomo Tyre Models and Collections

With Sumitomo Rubber Industries producing tennis balls alongside its array of tyres, it’s safe to say that versatility is a priority for the brand. This plays into the Sumitomo tyre portfolio, which is rife with models for different conditions and vehicular needs, including passenger car tyres, 4x4 tyres, and commercial tyres.

The Sumitomo BC100 is one of the most popular summer tyres for passenger cars, as it supports comfortable driving over long distances and balancing traction with wet grip and dry cornering. The Sumitomo HTR Z5 is another popular car tyre which supports high-performance, while the HTR Enhance LX2 is a stable tyre with excellent tread life and performance-enhancing features.

For SUV driving, leading 4x4 tyres from Sumitomo include the Encounter AT2 tyres and the Encounter HT2 – with AT covering all-terrain driving while HT refers to highway-terrain and smooth road surfaces.

Sumitomo SL727 van tyres are another model worth noting for larger vehicles, or there’s the Sumitomo WT200 tyres with extra chunky tread blocks and extra traction.

Browsing the Sumitomo Collection by Season
With Sumitomo a major player in the tyre market, combining its plethora of connected brands and exposure to leading research and development with budget-friendly prices, drivers in the UK enjoy access to both the versatile all-season designs and season-specific designs.

To start with the tyres that almost all UK drivers can use, all-season tyres combine the reliability of winter tyres with the performance of summer tyres, culminating in a solution that’s suitable for year-round use. All-season tyres are stable on ice and snow and can also manage handling in summer months – with top models including the Sumitomo HTR A/S P03 passenger car tyres and the Encounter HT2 tyres for SUVs and 4x4s.

The Sumitomo summer tyres range spans designs which offer superior grip on wet roads and dry roads. The tread pattern on these tyres is versatile, with an extra strong rubber compound used to ensure a stable structure even in high temperatures. Tyres like the Sumitomo HTR Enhance CX2 and the HTR Z5 are great summer tyres for passenger cars and off-road vehicles.

Winter tyres combine excellent traction and grip with a pliable rubber and tread compound for maximum handling efficiency and performance. Models from the Sumitomo winter range include the performance-boosting Encounter AT2 all-terrain and off-road tyre, and the Ice Edge Studdable passenger car tyre for superior winter grip.

Choosing Sumitomo Car Tyres

For drivers in the UK, Sumitomo offers the perfect balance of cost efficiency and quality. Choosing the right tyre is a case of identifying the right tyre size, then selecting the best tyre type according to climate and your vehicle.
