History

Nokian Tyres was founded in 1988 in Finland, though its founding company was brought to life in 1898, becoming one of the world’s leading manufacturers of winter tyres. This reputation is thanks, in no small part, to its Finnish roots and the establishment of a world leading facility for testing winter tyres.

Originally, Nokia Tyres produced bicycle tyres as well as vehicle tyres, though ultimately it sold the bicycle branch to another Finnish company – focussing on the production of safe, performance-focussed vehicle tyres. Over the years, Nokian Tyres has continued to invest in the development of tyres that are deemed safe across different climates and conditions, with 1936 seeing the introduction of the Hakkapeliitta branded winter tyre.

The Hakkapeliitta model remains the most popular winter tyre across many Nordic countries, now owned and produced under the Nokian brand which was formed in 1988.

Since 1988, production has increased, testing has become more sophisticated, and the brand’s expertise in extreme conditions continues to drive its development of safe, reliable tyres for varying climates.

Nokian’s Position on the Tyre Market

The Nokian Tyres brand is considered a premium brand, especially with regards to its winter tyre range which is recognised as being at the top of the tyre market.

Innovative technology sits Nokian Tyres alongside other premium brands like Pirelli, Michelin and Bridgestone, while its geographical position as the northernmost tyre brand on the market means that Nokian Tyres is well placed to produce the industry’s best winter tyres.

Some of the benefits from a driver perspective include reliability and of course the brand reputation, which is demonstrated in the durability and longevity of each tyre model in its intended climate and conditions. Among the core innovations used by Nokian Tyres, drivers particularly herald the Arctic Grip Crystals which boost traction on ice, as well as increased sustainability that derives from the use of eco-friendly materials, and the complex tread patterns that facilitate superior traction.

Popular Nokian Tyre Models and Collections

Nokian Tyres is one of the top brands on the tyre market, with many of its tyre models selected by drivers for their stability, safety, and performance.

Among the most popular models, one notable tyre collection is the Hakkapeliitta winter range – first developed well before the rest of the Nokian Tyre range – which balance traction with pliable rubber compounds for winter performance. The Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 is one such model, while the Hakkapeliitta 10 EV studded offers extra grip to electric cars which are both heavier and more challenging to handle in cold conditions.

The Nokian Remedy WR G5 is another tyre which rates well for winter driving, developed for passenger cars and SUVs. Meanwhile, models like the Nokian Seasonproof 2 offer all-season performance and stability come rain or shine, and the Nokian Powerproof 2 delivers the same reliability and functionality in the summer months.

While Nokian undoubtedly ranks highest with its collection of winter tyres, it does not neglect other areas of the market – with all-season and summer tyres also considered some of the best for navigating different terrains and climates.

Browsing the Nokian Catalogue by Season
When it comes to the Nokian Tyres catalogue, most drivers know that Nokian is the go-to for winter tyres. Not only are tyres engineered in a climate that typically requires these more stable winter models, but it boasts the world’s best and only permanent winter testing facility, supporting the continued rollout of tyre technology and innovation.

All-season tyres are able to safely navigate both winter and summer conditions, provided they do not become extreme. For UK drivers, this is a practical and convenient solution for year-round driving and does not require tyres to be changed as the seasons shift.

Among the top all-season tyres, Nokian boasts its Seasonproof 2 model as well as some other models including the Nokian Surpass AS01, the Nokian Tyres One HT, and the Nokian Weatherproof (the latter being a winter tyre that can be used all-year round in specific and much colder climates).

Summer tyres balance wet grip with dry performance and superior handling. They are designed to navigate variable terrains and temperatures, often with reinforced sidewalls that can handle the pressure of warmer weather.

Nokian’s summer range includes models like the Powerproof 2, the Nokian Rockproof off-road 4x4 tyre, and the Nokian ZLine for high-performance vehicles and high speed driving.

Some of the best winter tyres are the ones that offer high levels of traction alongside increased stability and comfort – even on challenging and sometimes treacherous roads. Nokian is well regarded for its winter range, with some of its best tyres falling under this category – as outlined above.

See the full Hakkapeliitta range for popular winter tires, as well as the Remedy WR G5 - all of which are built for winter conditions.
