History and the Michelin Brand

Ask anyone to name a tyre brand, and the chances are that they will say ‘Michelin’.

A brand that doesn’t just manufacture tyres, but which also has one of the most recognisable logos, and which even exists outside the tyre sector as a restaurant ratings board and travel guide provider, Michelin is one of the top and best-known premium tyre brands in the world.

The company was founded in 1889 in France and now boasts 60 facilities across 18 different countries. It consistently comes out on top in lists of company size, turnover, and reputation – producing tyres for a diverse selection of vehicles and driver types.

As well as the various tyre types and features, it’s important to recognise Michelin tyres' reputation among vehicle manufacturers too. The likes of BMW, Audi, and Mercedes all choose high-performance Michelin tyres as one of the go-to brands for new vehicles, with various motorsport events all citing Michelin as being an existing or former partner.

The motorsport connection between Michelin tyres and the likes of F1 is widely talked about, as Michelin grew in competitiveness and quality in the years 2001 to 2006. After that, Michelin withdrew from F1. Nonetheless, Michelin still provides tyres for MotoGP, endurance races, and rally driving.

Michelin’s Position on the Tyre Market

Amid the countless innovations and technologies that keep Michelin and its tyres at the forefront of the market, several leading collections and tyre models have emerged as both competitive and reliable – across the car, motorbike, and bicycle sectors.

These include the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 and the CrossClimate+ tyres, with various CrossClimate tyre ranges for SUV vehicles, sports cars, on and off-road vehicles. The Latitude range is designed with SUVs in mind, supporting crossover vehicles which move from road terrain to off-road terrain, with Latitude tyres boasting deep tread patterns and a sturdy build. The Alpin tyres range, meanwhile, is an award-winning winter tyre, and the Primacy tyres range is designed around performance from new tyres right down to used tyres with low tread depth ratings.

These diverse collections rely on Michelin’s investment in innovation and its array of tyres features, as listed in the section below.

Popular Michelin Features and Models

Safety, performance, and comfort are always front of mind when it comes to the selection of new and replacement tyres. Michelin embeds this into every car tyre by investing in “innovation and the road and beyond” – as quoted on its own website.

You will notice when browsing the collection that there are several key features built into tyres, from the Michelin Acoustic capability to minimise noise inside the vehicle, to the MaxTouch technology which balances the weight of the vehicle across all four tyres delicately to ensure even wear and optimum comfort. Michelin CTIS (also known as the Central Tyre Inflation System) is built into tyres for large agricultural machinery to protect land, while the EverGrip technology is an effective way of enhancing traction and grip across different terrains and climates.

Michelin run flat tyres are another type worth noting, improving driver safety and the efficiency of each journey. Another innovative feature that tyres from the Michelin range boast, is an adaptable tyre casing. This not only minimises fuel consumption and prevents excessive tread wear and damage from the road, but also enables tyres to adapt to the surfaces they drive on. Tread patterns adapt as the tyre wears down, so that they don't become less stable but instead change their surface grip to maintain good handling and responsiveness to driver action.

Find Michelin Tyres
Browsing the Michelin Catalogue by Season
The full range of Michelin tyres includes summer tyres and winter tyres, as well as all season tyres and special tyres for sports cars, motorcycles, bicycles, and other machinery / vehicles. While not cheap, Michelin tyres always deliver on quality, with the brand committed to supporting sustainable mobility and the growth of electric cars alongside standard fuel-filled vehicles. This applies across a range of different weather conditions, climates, and vehicle types.

With the UK enjoying temperate climate conditions all year round, the versatility of all season car tyres tends to be an easy option with no need to track temperatures and road conditions. These tyres are built to support good traction and handling all year round with a rubber compound that adapts to the surrounding temperature. Minimising the need for tyre fitting and replacement means that all-season tyres are a good option for drivers who want to enjoy convenience and ease. One particularly notable collection which sits in the all-season tyre range is the Michelin CrossClimate tyres, as these have the benefits of summer tyres in the excellent braking on wet and dry roads, as well as a tread pattern that supports good grip in the winter months.

Michelin’s range of summer tyres are designed to perform well when the temperature is more than 7° C. They are recognised for their longevity and performance and boast a low rolling resistance which is also incredibly fuel efficient. Each summer tyre ranges in price - and while they are often cheaper than all-season tyres, they are not suitable for driving in the winter months and will need to be switched for more suitable and safer tyres. Strong sidewalls ensure that tyres maintain their structure even in warm conditions, while the tread pattern ensures high cornering capability on wet and dry roads.

The winter range of tyres, including Michelin Alpin tyres, are purpose-built for conditions below 7° C – whether or not there is snow and ice on the roads. At Michelin, it’s tyres with the 3PMSF marking on them that are truly designed for cold climates, with the symbol standing for 3 Peak Mountain Snow Flake. These tyres, and others in the winter range, have excellent braking and accelerating capacity on cold and icy surfaces, and support good traction. The tread pattern and depth is able to dispel surface water and maintain grip on even the most challenging of road surfaces.

Choosing the Best Michelin Tyres

Michelin is a reputable premium brand that has held its position at the top of the market for a reason. Each tyre the brand produces is underpinned with quality, with specific collections of tyres trusted by some of the biggest vehicle manufacturers in the world, and an unrivalled service provided by the Michelin Tyres team.

And that's not all. Michelin may be a brand that commuters and family drivers trust, but it's also a brand synonymous with race quality - creating the right tyres with flexible features to suit both markets.

The 'Dynamic Response' of performance tyres creates a belt of combined nylon and aramid to optimise the link between steering wheel and road surface without affecting speed, while regular car tyres use the MaxTouch tyre technology combined with EverGrip to maintain good contact between tyre and road.

Michelin tyres make it possible to explore the road, your way.
